The main characteristic of the pen is its writing capabilities. A pen is worthless without ink and even more worthless without a writer. Thus a pen is only as good as the writer and not the other way around.

In this verse, David was writing about a good matter that invites us to understand. This writing did not exist because of his knowledge but written because God has used his tongue as His pen. Thus everything that David (and all other writers for that matter) ever did was to write whatever God has dictated him. Inditing meant “invitation”, “dictation”, or “composition”. The verse openly suggests that David was compelled to compose not his own composition but God’s. Take note that he “speak of the things” and not “think of the things”. While he spoke of the things that God wanted him to write, he was ready. Ready to write whatever his tongue will utter. Question here is; won’t he make a mistake?

Psalms 119:89 states that For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. It clearly means that everything that David will write was already finished in heaven. Thus, before the birth of David, the book of Psalms was already written in heaven because it was settled. Psalms 12:6-7 further states that The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. God will not jeopardize His very words by giving it to unjust men (David was a murderer. See 2 Samuel 11:9) and create havoc (1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints). John 15:16 clearly states Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. God chooses men, made them holy (ordained them) to do good works in His name. God chose David, a murderer, to write His very words and made sure that His words will remain pure. How then will we live Matthew 4:4 (But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God), if you don’t have His pure words? Truly God is totally unfair if He will allow His words, His very instructions to be given to us tainted and perverted. God merely used David as His pen no more, no less. We live because of God’s pure words. As God’s servant, I believe and trust on His very words.

The Author and not the Pen

My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Ps 45:1 KJV
